Though happy and carefree by nature, Daisy Fields is in a fragile state looking for stability and friendship when she moves to Solvang, California, hoping to find a fresh start. What’s It About?Daisy is a woman down on her luck and starting her life over, when she meets artist extraordinare, Garret Brinkley. He hires her as his manager/personal assistant and liaison to art collectors who visit his art gallery, but it becomes clear that he wants more from Daisy.
Daisy thought working for Garret would be a dream come true; she has a beautiful home to live in, and gets to discuss art with customers. Except Garret is a tyrannical, mentally unstable boss who makes inappropriate and unprofessional sexual advances toward her, and won’t allow her to have a personal life. She doesn’t understand why the man who humiliates her daily has her paralyzed with sexual desire.
Caring for Garret is just too hard, and when she decides to move on to another love interest, Garret surprises her… Is it possible that he actually cares for Daisy?
My Thoughts
This novel reminded me a lot of The Naked Chef, by Diane Hernandez. It starts with a woman who is down on her luck, who meets a rich man who offers her a job. With the exception of that, The Naked Chef and Daisy’s Choice are nothing alike.
Garret suffers from social anxiety and has a hard time connecting with people. He doesn’t “need people”, and is incapable of love, while Daisy is the complete opposite. There were times where Garret’s actions horrified me, and I wanted to yell at my book, “Daisy, get out! Run, fast!”
(And yes, I did picture him as Aleida Diaz’s boyfriend, from Orange Is The New Black.)
The writing is excellent. Author Diane Hernandez has a talent for world building, as I felt present in the moment of the story. The author explained situations well.
My favorite character was Daisy. I just wanted to wrap her up in a big, protective hug. The author couldn’t have possibly created a more sympathetic character than Daisy Fields. -(Yes, her name is “Daisy Fields” :) ) I also liked that the POV was through her.
My favorite scene was with Daisy and the surfers, when she receives a phone call and she is drunk/stoned out of her mind. Her phone conversation cracked me up and was right on! I don’t want to give away too much, but that whole scene was my favorite from the story, and made me have second thoughts.
Towards the end I noticed Garret cracking his hard shell a little bit. I’m curious to see if Daisy is able to change him in book 2. I think that would be a wonderful change.
And the choice Daisy made? Whoa… Didn’t see that coming and I’m not sure what I think of it. I look forward to Garret’s Control, Out Of Your Mind Book 2!

Two very complexed characters, both representing each side of the coin. Daisy is thoughtful and kind with a simple young understanding of the world. Garrett on the other hand is dark, brooding, with more complexity then any one person should ever have to deal with. What is he hiding? This unlikely couple need each other, I can't wait to see who prevails. Story line is rich with description. really looking forward to Book II
Loved this book! The interactions between the characters were great! Daisy and Garrett's relationship is tumultuous to say the least, but as they saw "nothing worth having is easy." First book I've read by her, and am looking forward to the release of the next book that I'm hoping will be out shortly!
Would recommend that you give it a try and hope that you'll like it as much as I did!
Great story! I've already downloaded part 2. This book had me worried at the beginning, I almost stopped reading because I couldn't figure out what was going to happen. But wow! When things started happening, it kept going and going. The relationship is kind of scary and at times I'm afraid to go on because Garret is a loose cannon waiting to explode. Daisy is so sweet and forgiving; I can't stand to see her hurt. But she is picking up on things and starting to understand there's something different about Garret. From her past, it's almost like she is the perfect woman for him. That one person who can reach past all the pain and confusion in his life and help him begin to tap into his inner compassion and love. I hope there's a happy ending. If you are into heart wrenching, raw, possessive love mixed with sweet innocence, this is a must read.
This book made me feel so many things that I don't even know where to begin! This is a beautiful, heart wrenching, sad, poignant, sexy, and raw love story. I had many moments wondering how these two could ever be truly happy, but I was cheering them on all the way. Ms Hernandez did a beautiful job developing these characters and making us feel everything they were going through. Daisy was forced at a young age to care for her mother who had Alzheimer's. Her mother was all she had in the world. When her mother no longer knew who she was, Daisy decided to find a new place to start over. She needed to create a happier life with lots of friends. She stopped in Solvang, a town she and her mother had visited and held many good memories. This is where Daisy finds a job with artist Garret Brinkley to manage his gallery and his home. She lives in his maid's quarters allowing her to use most of her wages to pay for her mother's care. Daisy is a beautiful, lively, smart but naive young woman. She was an art history major in college and knew and respected Garret's work but was not prepared for the strong, handsome and sexy man he was. Garret is the exact opposite of Daisy. He is gruff, broody, controlling and mercurial. But Daisy could also see that he was caring and compassionate no matter how he tried to hide it. He was also just as attracted to Daisy as she was to him. Garret did not want to need anyone including Daisy but he couldn't stay away from her either. He needed to keep her close to him and would over step many boundaries. When Daisy started to feel scared and alone in the world she would cling to Garret only to have him push her away, then draw her back in again. He has so many secrets but cannot open up or let her in yet. There were so many times I laughed then cried and wanted to yell at them both. Then Ms Hernandez would give me a glimpse of light that made me see something redeemable and likeable about them. This is a beautifully heartbreaking story about 2 people who are so flawed and broken but maybe putting their pieces together might make a whole. I know there is so much more to Daisy and Garret's story. I am looking forward to reading more in the next book, Garret's Control!
